Dec. 6 at 3:30  Thomas Keller will be  signing copies of Ad Hoc at Home, his great new cookbook. Because this is his only event in San Francisco, the book must be purchased  at OMNIVORE BOOKS to be signed by Mr. Keller.  Omnivore Books also carries his older books for purchase, but you can also bring in your own copies of his books to have signed.

The sixth annual Food From the Heart is always a bustling scene filled with music, dancing, seasonal small plates, wine and community. You are invited to stroll through the marketplace where food vendors will offer small bites from $2-4 per taste and wine pours from $4-6. This year guests will enjoy special wines from members of the Napa Vally Vintners, music by Golden Gate Hot Club (gypsy jazz), Tango Milango, and a classical music quartet.

• Be of Hispanic/Latino heritage
• Be U.S. citizen or permanent resident residing in the United States or Puerto Rico
• Plan to enroll as a full-time undergraduate student during the 2009 – 2010 school year in an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S. with a hospitality management or culinary program.
• Plan to pursue a degree within the hospitality management, hotel management, culinary, or food and beverage field
• Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale

THE DEBS FAMILY COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP: SEEKING APPLICATIONS

The Debs Family Community College Scholarship, generously donated by Mrs. Ruth Debs through the Jewish Community Endowment Fund, provides $500, need-based scholarships to students enrolled at CCSF. To apply, you must have a 2.5 GPA, have completed 9 units and be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.

Mrs. Debs accepts applications on a rolling basis. This means that if you are enrolled in an academic or vocational/technical program, you may apply for this scholarship at any time during the year rather than having to wait until spring, as with most scholarships.

“Our Award Winning Festival celebrates its 9th year with an action packed weekend of very informative lectures by the movers and shakers of the vegetarian movement,” said Dixie Mahy, the President of the San Francisco Vegetarian Society, “plus creative vegan cooking demos; international cuisine to sample or buy; a Children’s Corner play area, and a variety of world entertainment.”

The San Francisco Vegetarian Society was organized forty years ago in 1968 when thirty people responded to a classified ad, “Vegetarians Unite!” Last year the Veg Festival attracted 4,500 people.

Board member and Treasurer Joseph Cadiz explained, “For the last couple of years, Mayor Gavin Newsom has declared our event as World Vegetarian Day in the City. We anticipate he will do the same this year.”

The event, that first began nine years ago, has become so popular in recent years SFVS decided two years ago to collaborate with In Defense of Animals to spur on more growth in the festival. One immediate change was to make it a two-day event instead of just one.

“In addition there will be plenty of booths where festival goers can purchase a diverse assortment of ethnic, vegan foods and an array of earth and vegan friendly merchandise.” said Cadiz.

The event is 10am to 6pm on Oct 4 & 5; has a $6 suggested donation, otherwise it is free for Children, Students, and Seniors.

“We have an early bird special – free to everyone to 10:30 a.m. both days.” said Mahy.
